Character Name: Marche Malheur
Malheur roughly means “misfortune” in French.
Age: 19
How long They've Been in the Deck: Just arrived
Suit/Rank: Two of Hearts
History: Marche’s mother, Izanami Yuu, is Japanese and father, Amadour Malheur, is French. Marche was the product of Izanami and Amadour’s year-long relationship while Izanami was studying abroad in France. The story goes that Izanami became pregnant out of wedlock and was relentlessly scolded by her grandmother when the rest of the Yuu family found out. When Marche was born, the scolding only got worse, partly because Izanami chose to keep the French surname as well as choose a foreign given name, and even sometimes Marche’s appearance was scorned because of the blonde hair colour, the one non-Japanese trait Marche inherited.
A few months later, Izanami’s grandmother who was already suffering from some mental health issues, snapped from the stress of the disgrace Izanami had brought the family who birthed the abomination that was Marche. Brandishing a kitchen knife, she attacked Izanami, who was holding Marche, mostly cutting her arms as she tried to block her grandmother from getting to Marche. One swing, however, got through Izanami’s defense and connected with Marche’s face, leaving part of the nose hanging and a gruesomely deep and gushing gash. At this point, other family members heard the screams and rushed in and confiscated the knife from Izanami’s grandmother.
The gash was deep enough that Marche grew up with a rather obvious scar that went from cheek to across the nose to the other cheek. At a young age, Marche would hide under masks or bandanas or other cloths so others wouldn’t stare. Marche couldn’t even find relief with concealer make-up as a teen since it was a raised scar. But as for the blonde hair, Marche felt rather empowered by it and wouldn't dye it a more “acceptable” colour despite the complaints from family. As a teen, Marche even adopted a Japanese fashion style called visual kei, so that the stares were because of a strange style instead of an eyesore on the face, which somehow made all the difference in Marche’s mind.
One day, a particularly pensive Marche went wandering on a walk through a forest near home. There, Marche came across a small clearing with an old, forgotten Shinto-style gateway, and upon walking under it there was a slight shift in atmosphere. Thinking it was only imagination, Marche shrugged it off and figured it was a good point to head back. Though, the forest seemed to have changed. Notorious for being directionally challenged, Marche thought perhaps a wrong turn was taken. But it was soon apparent that this was no longer the forest near home, as Marche started to notice that the trees were not native to Japan. After wandering around for a few hours, Marche made it out of the forest only to find out Marche had stumbled upon a foreign land.
Personality: Marche doesn’t smile a lot and seems for the most part neutral to the dramas of other people. Unless it involves the abuse or ridicule of children, then Marche gets very protective. Apart from that, Marche doesn’t seem to particularly enjoy hanging around children. Marche has a soft spot though, and believes that everyone deserves a little love, especially those who were hated or out-casted for issues or appearances that were out of their control. But for those that really get to know Marche will start to see a more playful and easygoing side. Marche felt the Hearts would fit the most, and thought maybe they too would accept Marche despite being an Outsider hiding behind a mask.
Appearance: Marche is a bit androgynous. At 5’7’’, 121 lbs, and having a rather feminine face coupled with a chest as flat as the Kansas plains, Marche often gets called “he” or “she” or even simply “you” by strangers and even acquaintances. A decorative cloth wraps around across Marche's nose and ties at the back, which covers up a long, raised facial scar. Marche sports a clothing style known as visual kei in Japan, which doesn’t help with the androgyny since visual kei style is partly known for optional cross-dressing. Apart from the blonde hair, the rest of Marche’s racial features were inherited from Izanami.

"They’re staring at me, like they do every day," thought Marche. For Marche, this is an everyday fight. Where ever Marche is, people can't help but to look. They’re always staring, because of the mask. Marche thinks of it as the only shield between their stares of curiousity of what lies underneath and the stares of a mix between horror and fascination of the gnarled and warped skin. Sometimes Marche thinks about removing the mask suddenly, to make them gasp and regret ever wondering, but then thinks better of it. Marche is a little impatient to leave and starts tapping a pen against the desk. The professor gives a fierce glare. The tapping stops.
The moment the bell rings, Marche is the first one out the door, scuttling through the maze-like hallways until the exit is reached. Fresh air. "Ah, I wish I could get a better whiff of it..." Marche mumbles aloud. The mask makes it hard to enjoy some of the subtle smells of everyday life. Lots of people are out and about today, and a little kid stops and points.
"Mommy, look! That person has an owwie!" The little girl's mother quickly yanked her to her side and said something to her in a hushed voice. Marche pretended not to notice. Besides, getting home was Marche's priority.
Marche quickly changes out of the school uniform and into preferred clothing. "Such a freedom these are," Marche cooed. It was a very eye-catching style called visual kei. It gave Marche comfort to be stared at because of the clothes instead of the mask. And because there are others with that style, Marche would fit in a little better. It's only a temporary solution, though. Marche can't continue this cycle forever. "But, then again," Marche mutters while exiting the house, "life is full of temporary things."
